Hey!  That’s not a bobolink!  But–it *is* a great looking creature, don’t you think?  This Halloween Pennant was hidden down in the long grass out of the winds at Byers Woods on Saturday, June 25, 2011.

The event was well-attended by more than 100 folks from all over the state (and even a few out-of-staters were present!).  There was plenty to see and do at Byers Woods, especially overlooking the wide grassland areas of reclaimed land where the stars of the day–bobolinks–nest.  My high count for the day was 5 male bobolinks at one time from my tent stake out.

Eastern Meadowlarks were singing, perched up on the Earth-burping pipes.

Vendor tents were set up along the edge of the grasslands with all kinds of displays and, of course, fun things to purchase.

This was my first ever visit to Byers Woods just South of Ashland, OH.  I was surprised at the size of the area and the amount of great grassland habitat.

Here is one of the stars–a male Bobolink in breeding plumage.  Many folks got great views of these birds through the scope.  Unfortunately, after everyone in line got a look, the birds often moved on.  My camera was not so lucky on this day and this is the best shot I have for the day of a boblink.  Both Savannah Sparrows and Grasshopper Sparrows were present during the event as well.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit to this fascinating area.  Thanks to Cheryl Harner, and the hard-working volunteers, Greater Mohican Aububon Society, and Ashland Parks for a great event!
